Midterm Syllabus for Biostats Course VHM 801 at AVC - Fall semester 2024
The syllabus for the mid-term exam of VHM 801 broadly consists of the
material covered in Sessions 1-7 of the course. For each of the
textbooks allowed (see note on textbook), this corresponds
roughly to the following material.
Baldi & Moore (4th): Chapters 1-2, 6-15, 17-19,
- exclude Sections (numbering following the Contents, e.g. 1.0-1.7 for Chapter 1) 1.7, 7.5, 8.5, 8.6, 9.7, 9.8,
10.4, 10.5, 10.6, 12.7, 12.8, 15.5, 18.7, 19.4.
Stephens (V4.1): Chapters 1-9,
- exclude Sections 1.3, 2.5, 4.5, 9.3
- material on choice of sample size in Sections 7.2 and 7.3
- include (from another book or lecture handouts) material on sampling
and experimental design,
- include (from another book or lecture handouts) more advanced
material on one and two proportions.
Moore, McCabe & Craig (7th): Chapters 1-8:
- exclude Sections 2.1-2.5, 3.4, 6.4, 7.3, 8.2
- material on choice of sample size in Sections 6.1 and 8.1
- exclude all "Beyond the basics" sections, except pp. 477-79 and 494-96 ("plus four" method for one and two proportions),
- exclude specific formulae for power calculations for t-tests (Section 7.1).
Additional material included (regardless of which textbook is used):
- Supplementary Chapter 27 of Baldi & Moore (excluding the last section, Comparing several samples:
the Kruskal-Wallis test); note however, that calculations of P-values for rank-based tests is not
included.
Specific topics not included in the mid-term exam syllabus:
- Bayes formula, tree diagrams,
- statistical inference for two proportions (both CI and the (classical) z-test),
- McNemar's test,
- the Poisson distribution.
